In Starcraft 2, each unit has a specific strength and weakness. They key to winning games is to build whatever is good against your enemy’s army. When your enemy adapts and changes what he is building, you need to follow suit.
The first thing to notice when looking for Starcraft 2 unit counters is each unit’s “type”. Every unit is assigned to two to three classes: either light or armored, biological or mechanical, and either massive or not massive. You can see this in game by selecting a unit and looking to the bottom of your computer screen.
Next, you want to mouse over all the different types of units and check out any bonus damage they may deal. Here is a list of common Starcraft 2 units and the damage bonus they deal:
Reaper: + damage to light units
Marauder: + damage to armored
Ultralisk: + damage to armored
Ghost: + damage to light
Phoenix: + damage to light air
Thor: + damage to light air units
Immortal: + damage to armored
Corruptor: + damage to massive
Now, to find unit counters you can generally assume that a unit which deals bonus damage to another unit class will be a counter to all units of that class. For example, the Marauder deals bonus damage to armored units and as a result counters armored units like Thors, Roaches, and Stalkers.
Not every unit follows this neat chart though. The Reaper deals bonus damage to light units but it is not a strong counter versus the Ghost. The reason for this is that the Ghost and Reaper are both light units and both do bonus damage to other light units. The Ghost has more HP and does more damage than the Reaper, and as a result, the Ghost counters the Reaper.
Another example of this is the Ultralisk. This unit deals bonus damage to armored units. The Immortal is of the armored unit class, so you might think Ultralisks counter Immortals. Unfortunately for the Ultralisk, the Immortal also deals bonus damage to armored units at a much higher rate than the Ultralisk. As a result, the Ultralisk is no match for the Immortal in a one on one match-up.
Additionally, any Starcraft 2 unit counters guide can get screwed up because players rarely use a unit alone. Protoss players will often pair Immortals with Stalkers. The Marauder counters the Stalker, but the Marauder is countered by the Immortal. It is not exactly accurate to say the Marauder is a counter to the Stalker, because a mixed group of Stalkers and Immortals will easily defeat a similar-sized group of Marauders.
It can be tough to learn, but learning Starcraft 2 unit counters will go a long way to winning games in online play.
